Kunsten – Museum of Modern Art Aalborg

The building of Kunsten was designed by the world famous Finnish architect Alvar Alto, in collaboration with Elissa Alto and Jean-Jaques Baruël, and was opened in 1972.

In later years it underwent a thorough renovation, and re-opened with a new look, a new gallery, new classrooms, a new café and shop, and a new terrace, in 2016. The building itself is worth the trip here, but the inside holds both modern and contemporary art worth having a look at. This includes the mirror installation “Eleven Less One” by Michelangelo Pistoletto.

During the renovation, 317 tons of marble was replaced both inside and outside of the museum. The building is famous for allowing natural light in through unique parabola-shaped skylight constructions.
Permanent exhibitions such as “Let’s Talk”, or “All in a row or higgledy-piggledy?” can be found in the museum, as well as a variety of events during the year.

Lindholm Høje Museum

The Lindholm Høje Museum is located in Nørresundby, across the Limfjord bridge from Aalborg city, and right next to the historical Viking burial site Lindholm Høje,

Here you can learn about how the Vikings in the area lived during the iron and Viking ages. If you ever wondered what they ate and drank, what their religious beliefs were, how they kept cattle, worked the field, and how they lived their daily lives, you will find answers experiencing the different exhibitions featured at Lindholm Høje Museum. The exhibitions will take you through amazing reconstructions, panoramas, illustrations and 3D animations, with an outset in the recovered relics.

Aalborg Defence and Garrison Museum

Aalborg has served as a garrison town since 1779, and was the largest garrison in Denmark during WWII and the Cold War period.

The exhibitions at Aalborg Defence and Garrison Museum include vehicles (such as cars, planes, tanks, motorcycles and more), orders and .medals awarded during and after WWII representing 14 different countries, and it offers an exciting look at the weapons and equipment used by the armed forces in defending Denmark since WWII. This includes objects from the Army, the Air force, the Home Guard, the Police and the Civil Defence, from WWII and from Aalborg as a garrison town.

You are even welcome, to an extent, to touch or sit in the different exhibition objects.

Vestre Fjordpark

Vestre Fjordpark is a 165.000 square metre water park and activity centre which offers something for everyone who enjoys water sport and nature. It is located on the western part of Aalborg, yet still close to the city centre.

The park is separated into 6 different, named areas with different focus.

Stranden (the beach), is a large bathing area with basins, sand bottom, diving board tower, a climbing wall area, and plenty of space to sunbathe on the grass or on the roofs.

Tangen is located between the Fjord and the bathing area and this is where the kayaks are launched. There is also a floating bridge in the Fjord you can swim to or launch your kayak from.

Kilen is an open grass area with various opportunities for activities such as throwing Frisbee's, running on the pathways, foot- and handball, street basket or even beach-volley, and there is a child-friendly bike field there.

The other areas are Fladen, Krattet and Skoven, and they are all different with one being a large grass area with a bonfire place, one consists of narrow pathways and poles with nesting boxes for kestrels (Falcos), one is a forest on a hill changing into a bright forest of oak trees, which to the north is defined by flowery woods.

There are tables and benches located both in the entrance area and around the whole park area.
Vestre Fjordpark is open all day and the entrance is free of charge.

Park of Music

In 1987 Sir Cliff Richard was the first artist to plant a tree in Kildeparken in central Aalborg. Since then many more artists have been a part of creating this park of “Singing Trees”.

Some of the trees are accompanied by the artist’s own music and it can be activated by visitors by pressing a button on the foot of the artist’s tree. Here you can hear music from world famous artists like Sir Elton John, Kenny Rogers, Rod Stewart, Take That, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Victor Borge, Bryan Adams, ZZ Top and Elaine Paige.

Some of the trees even play Christmas tunes so if you want to get into the Christmas spirit you won’t be left without.

“The Singing Trees” in Kildeparken was inaugurated in early June 2012, and in the following two years the musical trees were activated 600.000 times.

The experience of listening to the various musical medleys flowing through and from the trees of the park has become a quite popular activity for both visitors and residents of Aalborg.
